Proposition 1, A Poison Pill for New York

With the race for the White House sucking up all the oxygen in the room, many New Yorkers may be unaware of six ballot proposals that need to be decided this election cycle. Among the most consequential is Proposition 1. Advocates are billing it as New York State’s Equal Rights Amendment and say it is needed to protect against “unequal treatment.” How could any right-thinking individual be opposed to that? But in reality, proponents want to enshrine abortion rights, even though, “abortion” is not mentioned anywhere in the text of the proposal. Supporters’ claim that this amendment would protect women’s “reproductive health” is disingenuous.

If enacted, Prop 1 would prohibit discrimination based on: “ethnicity, national origin, age, disability and sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, reproductive health care and autonomy.” The vaguely worded proposal would also require amending the state constitution. What New Yorkers are NOT being told, is Prop 1 would result in a pathway for illegal aliens to vote in state elections; creation of a constitutional right for biological males to compete in women’s sports; and a roadblock to parents wanting to know if their minor child is considering gender reassignment surgery or puberty blocker treatments.

Liberals are dressing up Prop 1 as an anti-discrimination amendment, but if adopted, it would result in just the opposite. It would discriminate against women, children, parents, and every single New York taxpayer. A quick check of the amendment’s supporters will tell you all you need to know about the direction in which the state is heading. One of its lead backers is state Senator Liz Krueger, who spearheaded the effort to adopt it after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, which removed federal protections for abortion access and left the issue for the states to decide, which is where that decision belongs.

The battle over Prop 1 is largely divided along party lines, with roughly 90 percent of democrats supporting it, and surprisingly, only half of republicans opposing it. Democratic politicians from Governor Hochul and State Attorney General Letitia James, to nearly every rank-and-file member of the Legislature are pushing its passage. Predictably, Planned Parenthood and New York State United Teachers are also on board. And why wouldn’t they be? Prop 1 would constitutionalize nearly every item on liberals’ wish list. If you care about protecting parental rights, women’s sports, and the integrity of New York’s elections, you will vote “no” on Prop 1.
